May 17 - Walking around in St Peter Port and a bus ride around the island

Of course, due to the late night, we did not get out exploring until noon.
We started off by going to the info center, and the bus info shop, both were very helpful.

We bought bus passes and decided to start off with a trip around the outer perimeter of the island.  In the east, there was heavy industry, power stations, container shipping.  In the north were rocky coast lines sprinkled with old watch towers/forts on the sea side, and residential on the inland side.  The west coast and southwest coast had more cliffs from land to the water.  The houses looked much more affluent.
Then back to St Peter Port to walk around the high street and looking briefly at Victor Hugo's house.... we will be back for a tour.

Our first full day on Guernsey- great!
St. Helier was too big; St. Aubin was too small; St. Peter Port is just right.

St. Peter Port is reminiscent of Sausalito - harbor, street and promenade along the water, a good High Street with shops, and little lanes and stairways climbing up the hills. We have a terrific view from our hotel room, because we are on on the hill. Getting down to town and back is quaint as quaint can be - stairways and stonewall-lined lanes.

We bought our bus pass and settled in for a ride around the island. Houses and cottages line the coastline. Plenty of German battlements/ruins (as on Jersey), but a much more relaxed and natural feel to the island. Not the hustle and bustle of Jersey, which suits us just fine.

When we finished that loop, we (I) poked around in the shops and made a bit of a plan for tomorrow (basic - a trip to a famous little chapel and a countryside walk around a reservoir).

We stopped at the Victor Hugo house, but the tours were all booked. We booked for Sunday.
VH wrote Les Mis while living on Guernsey and the peak that I had inside his house while making the booking promises an interesting and very visual tour on Sunday.

Marks and Spencer food hall supplies and we’re back in our room, relaxing, and again, gazing out to sea. We have a view of Castle Cornet, the harbor and Herm (another Channel Island) in the near distance. I sang R the “Good luck getting me out of here song”, first sung at the Town House Inn in Bath, England at the end of our Cotswold Way Walk. It is reserved for hotels that really tic all the boxes to a very high standard and this one certainly does. Well done, Margot (our travel agent).

Total Mileage:
3.5 miles (love the bus)

  1. Did you watch The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society on Netflix before traveling to Guernsey?
