May 12 - Visiting a Farm Museum

He said:
Today was supposed to have two destinations: a farm museum and a north coast geological feature called "Devil's Hole".  The bus system is great, if the driver is paying attention.... but we had a map and found a quiet road to walk back to St Helier.  Most of the roads are paved but have no sidewalk, so walking on a busy road is no fun.  But we found a quieter road with few cars and some bikes.... that was just fine: quiet and scenic.

She Said:
Another beautiful day on Jersey, which fancies itself as “the Sunny Channel Island”.
Today, it certainly was.

Our plan was to be bussing around the island with stops for sights and walking.
Started out as planned and took the bus to Hamptonne Farm Museum, a National Trust property dedicated to showing the rural farm life of Jersey from medieval times through the 1940’s.

The buildings on the property are well-preserved and represent several centuries of housing, for both people and animals. The property was continuously in operation as a farm throughout that time and it was interesting to see the advancements made over the years, from thatched roofs with the animals living in the same building as the people to the modern home (‘40s) with carpets and radios and lace curtains on the windows.

Pigs and Jersey calves and plenty of free range chickens. Some hens had just had chicks a week or so ago. I was surprised to see that their nests were really just dugouts in the dirt a bit off a walking path.
No frills, but all hens and chickens seemed fine and happy.

Not the largest attraction, so the two hour’s time we had set aside for it was perfect.
Then, a bit of a glitch on the return bus.
The roads are rural and narrow and the bus stop really has no shoulder on the road for waiting. So, we stood on the opposite side of the road where there was a cross path and knew we would have plenty of room and time to flag down the bus to stop to pick us up.
Ha!
Here comes the bus. We’re waving like mad! The bus driver doesn’t even look at us, which is pretty hard to do (rural, narrow, no shoulder), and drives by happily picking his nose!

Catch the next bus?
Can’t.
Bus only comes every two hours.
So, we walked back to our town and hotel. Luckily, we followed a cycle route, still on roads but even more rural and narrower than the bus road.

All’s well that ends well. Green. Serene Green. Quiet and peaceful.
Popped out a few miles later on the beach promenade, shared a Jersey soft-serve ice cream cone and continued on home to our hotel.

Total Mileage:
6.9 miles
