May 16 - Our last day on Jersey - ferry to Guernsey

He said:
Today we said goodbye to the' States of Jersey', that is the official name.
I still wonder what those states are:
  • Gas, Liquid, Solid, Plasma?
  • Rock, Paper, Scissors?
  • Crowded, Over-crowded, Bursting?
  • Liberated, Inundated, Overated?
  • Petrified, Occupied, French Fried?
And Guernsey also has states of it's own.

We had a glitch in our transport, as the ferry was delayed due to a bad engine.  We had a substitute ship, still a ferry, but slower, so we were delayed a few hours and did not arrive at our next destination on Guernsey until near midnight.  The ferry took 2 hours to go 27 miles.

Before our ferry trip, while still on Jersey, we decided to use our bus passes for the last time.  We visited 'Devils Hole' on the north coast, giving us a better sense of the north coast and allowing us a bit of a walk.  We could see other Channel Islands across the water, Guernsey, Sark, etc...  It was a short but enjoyable walk on a relatively quiet side of the island.

Today we said a looong goodbye to Jersey.
Since our ferry was delayed by 3 hours (from 5:30 to 8:30) we had too much time to kill and not enough stuff to kill it with.
Left our bags at the hotel, bus into St. Helier and the Ferry Terminal to confirm our booking.
Bus up to Devil’s Hole on the north coast of the island, which is very Cornwall Coast-ish. Rugged, cliffs, crashing waves. Dramatic scenery.

Devil’s Hole -
Mid-1800’s a French frigate crashed on the rocks.
Jersey seamen rescued the crew.
Weeks later, the frigate’s wooden figurehead washed into the deep, craggy hole.
Local’s added wooden arms and legs.
And, Devil’s horns to the head.
The legend was born.

The “devil” was perched at various spots around the hole and for years it attracted tourists.
It had several iterations as devils got stolen and burned and dismembered.
The current devil is quite large - 15’ - bronze (or maybe just a cement cast) and stands in a pond above the hole.

Worth the trip.

We met a couple resting on a bench and struck up a nice travelers’ conversation.
Doug and Jan from Surrey.
Got some travel tips re: New Zealand and Australia.
Had some good laughs and solved the world’s problems!

Bus back to our hotel.

A word about our very excellent La Halle Manor Hotel -
Fantastic customer service.
After our day’s bussing around, we returned to the hotel and were happy to relax in their beautiful lounge, gazing out at the sea.
Even enjoyed tea and cake.
That’s customer service.

On the other hand, we had Condor Ferries.
seems that the company bought a new ferry ship a couple of years ago - apparently, it’s a lemon. Breaks down 10 times a year.
And it did before our scheduled trip from Jersey to Guernsey.
Quite a delay.
The only good news is that we had been rescheduled by them to sail on a freighter to Guernsey but they pressed into service one of their older (much slower) ships and we chugged over to Guernsey.
Arrived late to our hotel, which is very marvelous. La Fregate Hotel.
Enjoyed a good French Chardonnay and truffles.
Vacations are the best.

Total Mileage:
